When I got a phone and started using WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, accepting friend requests from relatives, I didn’t realize it would be a mistake.
Once I began uploading pictures, people started questioning my mom, asking where I had been, what I had uploaded, and so on.
I told my mom not to respond to anything because it wasn’t important. By the way, I hadn’t uploaded anything offensive or inappropriate—just pictures from college events, ethnic day, friends, inter-college competitions, and travels. That was it. They were just trying to bring me down by changing the image of me in front of my mother.
As time passed, I stopped uploading content. I hardly talk to people and rarely use WhatsApp or Instagram anymore. People know this very well. I don’t need to tell them—whenever I do talk to a friend, it might be a long conversation, but it’s never more than an hour.
Over time, nearly everyone who questioned my mom started using the latest phones and multiple apps. While it’s not a bad thing, today almost all of them upload a lot of content daily on WhatsApp and Instagram from Sharechat and other sources—things I’ve never used.
I hardly pay attention to what others upload when I come online. Even when I’m using the app, I don’t check my friends' statuses. I upload content visible only to close friends once every 15-20 days or for birthdays. To the rest of them, my accounts are like dead accounts, with no activity for months.
Today, a woman came to my mom and said that I must have thousands of photos in my phone, and if she checked, she'd find tons. I was like, “What? Seriously?”
The truth is, her son’s, nieces’, and nephews’ phones have 80-90 times more pictures and videos than mine. Yet, she complains that I have too many pictures, calling me "photo crazy," and so on.
I just want to tell her: Open your son’s, niece’s, and nephew’s WhatsApp and other chat apps. See what they’re doing. Check how many pictures and videos they have and how many movies they watch online before you come and talk to me.
I don’t watch movies. I don’t chit-chat with people. I don’t message or call anyone. My phone can stay dead for months because I don’t recharge my SIM. I hardly take pictures of myself, and I haven’t been outside in five years. And still, you come and complain to my mom about me.
I have no words for people like that.
This is the part of life where I want to use the word "Ridiculous."
Don’t talk rubbish about me unless you know everything about me. But does it even matter?
Why should I explain myself to people who want to pull me down, especially when they know nothing about me? They just want to talk. Congratulations, go ahead and talk.
Because I don’t care.
If it’s too much, and if anyone thinks I have an attitude, then yes, I do have an attitude. I definitely need it to deal with such people in life.
